Basic Overview

Ohio Proficiency Tests (OPTS) are currently administered annually in the 4th, 6th, 9th, and 12th grade levels.  Each grade level OPT consists of 5 sections, including writing, reading, math, citizenship, and science.  All grade level OPTs are administered each spring, usually during March.

Students must pass all section of the 9th grade OPT in order to receive a high school diploma, and as such, is often referred to as the "graduation test."  The graduation OPT is administered in October, March, May and the summer each year,  so that any student not passing any section of the graduation OPT may retake that section as many as four times per year throughout the remainder of their high school years.

Most districts now administer the graduation OPT in March of the 8th grade year to maximize the number of opportunities that students may retake a section that they did not pass.  Effective July 1, 2002, the graduation OPT changed from a 9th grade test to a 10th grade test.  The 12th grade OPT is not required to receive a high school diploma, but is offered to all 12th grade students who have passed all section of the graduation OPT as of January 1 of their Senior year.  Students who pass all five sections of the 12th grade OPT are eligible for a scholarship of at least $500 if enrolled in an institution of higher education in the state of Ohio.

The 4th and 6th grade OPTs are currently not mandated for use in any high-stakes decisions, however recent legislation provides districts with the option to prohibit grade advancement for any student who does not pass 3 out of 5 sections of any OPT.  Effective July 1, 2000, the reading section of the 4th grade OPT is used to determine if students can advance on to 5th grade.
